Bank of England deputy governor to discuss future of Government-backed digital currencies at Leeds event

Deputy governor of the Bank of England Sir Jon Cunliffe will discuss the future of Government-backed digital currencies in Yorkshire this year, it has been announced.

The event, called ‘Other Side of the Coin’, will take place at Leeds Playhouse on September 30 as part of the Leeds International Festival of Ideas in a discussion hosted by broadcaster Naga Munchetty.

Sir Jon will be joined by cryptocurrencies expert Tom Duff Gordon for the event as they discuss the world of central bank digital currencies (CDBCs) and its parallels with cryptocurrency.

A spokesperson for the event said: “As our society swiftly moves towards a cashless future, Other Side of the Coin offers a unique opportunity to gain insights from Sir Jon Cunliffe and Tom Duff Gordon on the Bank of England's CBDC initiative.

"This new digital pound represents a government-backed form of currency, distinct from cryptocurrencies, while still denominated in sterling. During the event, the speakers will navigate the intricate landscape of CBDCs, shedding light on their potential impact and the challenges they present.
